“This situation is temporary” – Kurt Caldwell

I binge-watch a lot. I finally decided to watch Dexter New Blood the other day as I was just lounging on the couch. I’d just finished another show and decided to watch something on My List. I save so many things on My List but then I’m always looking for something new to watch. Kooky, I know.
As I’m watching the show, this character, Kurt Caldwell, finds himself in a bad (no spoiler alerts here I promise) situation. He bumps into one of the main characters, Dexter, who asks him about the situation and his response is “This situation is temporary.”
It gave me pause.

This situation is temporary.
This situation IS temporary.
This situation IS temporary.

Say it louder for the people in the back!
I like to say to my teams, “We are in an ever-changing environment.” We have to figure out how to be change agents, and change managers, and go with the flow. What we’re doing now, the applications and systems we’re using now, the processes that are currently implemented are all temporary. We have to keep up with technology, with the world, with the Joneses in order to stay relevant. The train is moving, and we have to decide if we’re going to jump on it, stay on it, or jump off and get left behind. This works…for the most part. In a work environment.
But what about in real life, outside of work, when that sudden change happens? Or in my case, the slow change? I’ve had 60 days to come to terms with the fact that I will be unemployed for the first time since I was 14 without a new job lined up.

It’s given me pause

Just like hearing Kurt Caldwell say, “This situation is temporary.” I don’t know what lies ahead but I do know, even in this new upcoming season of uncertainty that this situation IS temporary.
